WIDA Standards
World-class Instructional Design and Assessment
...provide educators of English language learners (ELLs) with a curriculum and assessment planning tool for content area language objectives. The proficiency-based strands help educators determine individual ELLs' English language proficiency levels and how to appropriately challenge them in reaching the next levels. The WIDA English Language Proficiency Standards are recognized worldwide for their innovative approach to measuring academic language development in English.

Social and Instructional Language

such as… Routines and rules; School - classroom objects/supplies,
personnel, procedures; Hygiene and Safety; Personal Information; Social
Behavior; Self and Family
English Language Proficiency Standard 2
The Language of Language Arts
English language learners communicate (listening, speaking, reading, writing)
information, ideas and concepts necessary for academic success in the
content area of Language Arts, such as…Concepts about print;
Comprehension strategies; Fluency strategies; Conventions and Mechanics;
Figurative language; Explicit/inferential information; Story elements and
Genres; Dramatic performances
English Language Proficiency Standard 3
The Language of Mathematics
English language learners communicate (listening, speaking, reading, writing)
information, ideas and concepts necessary for academic success in the
content area of Mathematics, such as…Patterns and relationships;
Two/three dimensional shapes; Problem-solving strategies; Interpretation
of data; Standard/Metric Measurement; Basic operations
English Language Proficiency Standard 4
The Language of Science
English language learners communicate (listening, speaking, reading, writing)
information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the
content area of Science, such as…Animals; Body Systems; Ecosystems;
Solar System; Weather Systems; Scientific process – predicting, inquiry,
recording, explaining, reporting about experiments
