Summary of Year - Grade 1

 

 

 

First Grade mathematics is about (1) developing understanding of addition, subtraction, and strategies for addition and subtraction within 20; (2) developing understanding of whole number relationships and place value, including grouping in tens and ones; (3) developing understanding of linear measurement and measuring lengths as iterating length units; and (4) reasoning about attributes of, and composing and decomposing geometric shapes.

Required Fluency:  1.OA.6 Add and subtract within 10.

Writing Content-Writer's Workshop

 

Our first graders are utilizing as much time as possible to read and read more. It is imperative that we instill a desire to write and read our writings. Your child will be participating in Lucy Calkin's Writer's Workshop. This workshop is designed to allow children to be taught through mini lessons and spend more of their time writing independently. Your child will be able to write books each week on topics they chose to practice the skills taught through Writer's Workshop.

 

Writer's Workshop consists of the following units:

 

Unit 1- Small Moments: Writing with Focus, Detail, and Dialogue

 

Unit 2- Non-Fiction Chapter Books

 

Unit 3- Writing Reviews

 

Unit 4- From Scenes to Series: Writing Fiction

Science Content

 

Science is a fun content for first grade. During this year your child will experience hands on experiences, stories, and activities that involve Earth, Physical, and Life Sciences.

 

Your child will discover magnets, light and sound, weather, plants and animals.

Reading Content-Reader's Workshop

 

Our first graders are utilizing as much time as possible to read and read more. It is imperative that we instill a desire to read and a love of reading. Your child will be participating in Lucy Calkin's Reader's Workshop. This workshop is designed to allow children to be taught through mini lessons and spend more of their time reading independently on his or her reading levels. Your child will be able to select books each week to practice the skills taught through Reader's Workshop.

 

Reader's Workshop Consists of the following units:

Unit 2: Learning About the World: Reading Non-Fiction

 

Unit 3: Readers Have Big Jobs to Do: Fluency, Phonics, and Comprehension

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask. It is expected that your child spends at least 15 minutes reading each day for homework.

Social Studies Content

 

There are so many great people and events to be learned in first grade social studies this year. Benjamin Franklin, Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, Sacagawea, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, George Washington Carver, and Ruby Bridges, just to name a few! Students will also learn where we live on a map, successfully identifying our continent, country, state, and city. Students will also begin to develop the foundations of spending and saving and producers and consumers. Through all of this, we will learn about important character traits.
