Discuss what you would need a map for. Many maps have a compass rose, which is a tool that displays directions. The cardinal directions are north, east, south, and west. Use the printed map of the school to show students that you can use different kinds of maps for different things. Explain how to read the ‘school’ map and what we could use it for. Use the printed map of the school to make a map key of the building. RISE Celebration WE DO Talk about a place (water park, amusement park, etc) that the students have been that has a map. Have students complete “Following Directions at the Farm” with you as a whole group. Have students read a map and give directions. For example, you can ask your children to find the cafeteria and then student volunteers can give specific directions on how to walk to the cafeteria. Remind your children to use clear language in their directions and use the cardinal directions as well as words like left, right, straight, and turn. Go through and talk about different areas in the building and what pictures we could use on the Map Key. YOU DO Students will complete Zoe’s Trip to the Zoo sheet. Students will follow simple directions to follow the route on a map. Complete “Following Directions on the Farm” Read the directions to the students as they glue the animal in the right location. Print school map for students to use to make their way to different areas of the school. Use the school map student version to let students draw a map key on their school map. WE CHECK Share with a partner what a map is and how it can be used. Share with a neighbor one direction found on a compass rose. Ask a friend if they would know how to get to the gym by themselves. Tell a neighbor what a map key is.
