Where Does Soil Come From?

Teacher and students will discuss throughout the book: 

1. Rocks are not living.  2. Rocks are solid. 3. Rocks are not man-made.  4. Rocks come from lava, magma, etc.

Also look at Powerpoint that's All about Rocks.

Teacher will show students how to sort a rock based on color, texture, and size.


Students will use the rocks they brought from home to complete “My Rock Investigation” paper.

Students will use their rock and sort themselves based on the rock’s attributes. Say “If your rock is smooth, line up over here.  Then, students sit down.  Teacher will ask, “If your rock is large, line up over here.”  Continuewith  game with different attributes.


Students will complete the “Rocks and Soil” book.


Teacher will engage students in discussion of the 3 different types of rocks:  igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic.

Students will choose a rock and predict whether it is an igneous rock.  Students will place rock in a tub of water to determine if it floats (igneous).

Teacher will review types of rocks and attributes.  If time allows, students will paint a rock.
