Benner, Burandt, Thompson – 5th Block 1 & 2 Jan. 13-17, 2024 Week of: *for additional curriculum information, please visit the district's resourceElementary Teaching Resources or Georgia Standards of Excellence READING Unit 6: Struggles for Survival WRITING Benchmark + Write Score Argumentative/Opinion Essays Monday, 1/13 Achieve Article: Three Wonders of the World Standard: RL.2 Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text, including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic; summarize the text. LT: I am learning to determine a theme from details in the text (story, drama, or poem) based on how the character in a story responds to challenges or how a speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic. SC: I know I can when I can… Identify the main character and describe his/her traits. Use details to support character traits. Analyze the story elements and key terms from the text to explain how the character reacts to them. Explain how the speaker of the poem reflects upon a topic. Lessons 1: Introduce the Unit: Struggles for Survival Activity: Students will read independent books and generate questions they have as they are reading. Jot down questions in reading journal. ELAGSE5W1: Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons. a. Introduce a topic or text clearly, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure in which ideas are logically grouped to support the writer’s purpose. b. Provide logically ordered reasons that are supported by facts and details. c. Link opinion and reasons using words, phrases, and clauses(e.g., consequently, specifically). d. They will discuss their findings and make annotations about what good writers do when sharing their opinion. They will look at their On Demand and consider how they could improve it with these techniques. Lesson 3: Identify Elements of a Folktale Activity: Students will read their own book (preferably a folktale) and identify the elements of it on their own. Students will view an example and then work with partners/teams to create their own introduction using that method. Thursday, 1/16 Standard: RL.7 Analyze how visual and multimedia elements contribute to the meaning, tone, or beauty of a text (e.g., graphic novel, multimedia presentation of fiction, folktale, myth, and poem). LT: I am learning to analyze how visual and multimedia elements contribute to the meaning of a text. SC: I know I can when I can… Identify multimedia and visual elements. Analyze a photo or video to help with understanding. Explain the mood or tone of a visual presentation. Analyze how visual and multimedia contributes to the overall meaning of the text. Lesson 4: Analyze How Multimedia (Illustrations) Contribute to Meaning and Tone Activity: Students will choose an illustrated text and mark the illustrations that contribute to the story’s meaning, mood, and/or tone. The teacher will share both passages with the students and then choose a stance. Lesson/Activities: The teacher will continue modeling the writing process with student help. Students will help determine 2-3 reasons to support the opinion. They will help choose evidence and ideas from the passages to help support the stance chosen on Thursday. Once these ideas are determined and organized, students will assist the teacher in writing the introduction. Students will then look at their On Demand prompt and consider how they could have improved it using these skills.
