Lesson

Sterling 7:

3.GSR.7.2 Determine the area of rectangles (or shapes composed of rectangles) presented in relevant problems by tiling and counting.
3.GSR.7.3 Discover and explain how area can be found by multiplying the dimensions of a rectangle.

LT: We are learning to find area with multiplication using the break apart strategy.

SC: I can use the break apart strategy for area.

I can use multiplication to find the area of a rectangle.

Lesson/Activity: Module 4 Lesson  11

Students decompose a large rectangle into two smaller rectangles.  They use the break apart and distribute strategy to find the area of the large rectangle.

SS3H3 Explain the factors that shaped British Colonial America. b. Compare and contrast colonial life in the New England colonies (education, economy, and religion).  c. Describe colonial life in America from the perspectives of various people: large landowners, farmers, artisans, women, children, indentured servants, slaves, and American Indians.  SS3G3 Describe how physical systems affect human systems. c. Explain how the physical geography of the New England colonies helped determine economic activities.

LT:  I am learning about why settlers came to North America and settled the New England colonies.

SC:  ❑ I can locate and label the New England colonies on a map of Colonial America. ❑ I can explain the reasons for settlement in the New England colonies. ❑ I can name two of the religious groups that settled in the New England colonies. ❑ I can explain why the founding of New Hampshire was different from the other New England colonies.

13 Colonies Song

Students will complete the Southern Colonies part of the flap book.

Have students label the Southern Colonies on the map.  Shade the Southern colonies.

Quest Day

Sterling 7

3.GSR.7.2 Determine the area of rectangles (or shapes composed of rectangles) presented in relevant problems by tiling and counting.
3.GSR.7.3 Discover and explain how area can be found by multiplying the dimensions of a rectangle.

LT: We are learning to find area with multiplication using the commutative and associative properties.

SC: I can use the commutative and associative strategies for area.

I can use multiplication to find the area of a rectangle.

Lesson/Activity: Module 4 Lesson  12

Students find sets of possible side lengths for a rectangle with a given area.  They apply the commutative and associative properties to multiplication expressions representing the area of the rectangle to generate new expressions  Students strategically check to see whether they have found all possible side lengths for rectangles within the given area.

After lesson:  TOPIC C QUIZ

SS3H3 Explain the factors that shaped British Colonial America. c. Describe colonial life in America from the perspectives of various people: large landowners, farmers, artisans, women, children, indentured servants, slaves, and American Indians.

LT:  I am learning to describe colonial life in the colonies from the perspectives of various people.

SC:  ❑ I can describe what life was like as a large landowner in the Southern colonies. ❑ I can describe what life was like as a farmer in the Southern colonies. ❑ I can describe what life was like as an artisan in the Southern colonies. ❑ I can describe what life was like as a woman in the Southern colonies. ❑ I can describe what life was like as a child in the Southern colonies. ❑ I can describe what life was like as an indentured servant in the Southern colonies. ❑ I can describe what life was like as a slave in the Southern colonies. ❑ I can describe what life was like as an American Indian in the Southern colonies.

View and discuss video of how to churn butter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKrVC4lTJVE&list=WL&index=10 (2:29)

Students will be given supplies to make a small sample of butter.  While shaking the cream, students will watch a couple of videos about other activities in colonial life.

Life as a child in the 18th century:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVxad8R4Nig (5:32)

Both colonists and Native North Americans used clay pots for cooking and storing food.  You could make a pinch pot to use for candy or nuts.

Lesson

Sterling 7:

Standard(s): 3.GSR.7.3 Discover and explain how area can be found by multiplying the dimensions of a rectangle.

LT: We are learning to find area with multiplication.

SC: I can use the correct units for area.

I can use multiplication to find the area of a rectangle

Lesson/Activity: Module 4 Lesson 13

Students select strategies to represent and solve area word problems by using drawings and equations.  After working independently to solve the problem, students share their work to compare and connect various representations and strategies..

Lesson

Sterling 7:

Standard(s): 3.GSR.7.3 Discover and explain how area can be found by multiplying the dimensions of a rectangle.

LT: We are learning to find area with multiplication using composite shapes.

SC: I can use the correct units for area.

I can use multiplication to find the area of a composite shape.

Lesson/Activity: Module 4 Lesson  14

Students find the area of composite shape by finding the areas of rectangles within the shape and adding them together.  Students then explore other strategies, such as finding the area of a larger rectangle and subtracting the area that is not part of the shape.
