Eureka Math

Eureka Math — also known as EngageNY — is a complete, PreK through 12 curriculum that carefully sequences the mathematical progressions into expertly crafted modules. Eureka Math connects math to the real world in ways that take the fear out of math and build student confidence—while helping students achieve true understanding lesson by lesson and year after year. The Glynn County School System has elected to implement the Eureka Math Curriculum in Kindergarten and Grade 1 for the 2016-17 school year.* Implementation will occur in subsequent grade levels, one grade level at a time, beginning with Grade 3 in 2018-19. In addition, teachers in Grades 4-5 may choose to use Eureka Math as a resource to supplement the Georgia Department of Education Mathematics Frameworks.

Reading

We will be using the Lucy Calkins Curriculum for Reading Instruction this year. Each day, all students will have the opportunity to read independently, read with a designated partner, read as a class, and listen to a read-aloud from the teacher. We feel that exposing children to reading in many different ways is beneficial to their growth. If you are interested in learning more about this program, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Writing

We will be using a Lucy Calkins curriculum to teach writing this year. Throughout the year, students will be exposed to 3 major types of writing: narrative, informative, and opinion. The writing curriculum is made up of the four following units:

  1. Small Moments: Writing with Focus, Detail, and Dialogue
  2. Nonfiction Chapter Books
  3. Writing Reviews
  4. From Scenes to Series: Writing Fiction

Students will have the opportunity to write about their own experiences many times. In our class, they will also be exposed to new experiences, as a whole group, that they will be able to form writing pieces about.

Benjamin Franklin, Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, Sacagawea, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, George Washington Carver, and Ruby Bridges, just to name a few! Students will also learn where we live on a map, successfully identifying our continent, country, state, and city. Through all of this, we will learn about important character traits.
