Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE)

The Georgia Standards of Excellence, or GSE, are the state's academic expectations for students in grades KK-12, and are the cornerstone of instruction in the Glynn County School System. The information and links below are from the Georgia Department of Education's (GaDOE's) website. You may also click the subheadings for each content area (English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies) and be forwarded directly to the GaDOE for further information.

English Language Arts GSE

The K-5 Standards define what students should understand and be able to do by the end of each grade. Fundamentally, students in grades K through 5 are focused on developing comprehension strategies that will enable them to manipulate grade-level texts of appropriate complexity, and communicate effectively both in writing and in speaking. Students will begin to anchor their inquiries and responses firmly to the text, whether literary or informational, using increasingly specific and relevant evidence to support their claims and inferences. Students’ analytical skills will extend to identifying main idea/theme, understanding character and plot development, and evaluating the impact of word choice. Additionally, students will identify structural elements in text such as scenes and chapters, distinguish narrative voice, understand the impact of aesthetic elements, and make logical connections. A key component of the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) is the expectation of appropriate grade level complexity in text choices. Complexity levels are assessed based upon a variety of indicators.

The K-5 standards are organized in the following Domains and Strands and include identical categories across grades. Use the blue box on the right to locate the full text of the standards for each grade level.

Mathematics GSE

The Georgia Mathematics Curriculum focuses on actively engaging the students in the development of mathematical understanding by using manipulatives and a variety of representations, working independently and cooperatively to solve problems, estimating and computing efficiently, and conducting investigations and recording findings. There is a shift towards applying mathematical concepts and skills in the context of authentic problems and for the student to understand concepts rather than merely follow a sequence of procedures. In mathematics classrooms, students will learn to think critically in a mathematical way with an understanding that there are many different ways to a solution and sometimes more than one right answer in applied mathematics. Mathematics is the economy of information. The central idea of all mathematics is to discover how knowing some things well, via reasoning, permit students to know much else—without having to commit the information to memory as a separate fact. It is the connections, the reasoned, logical connections that make mathematics manageable. As a result, implementation of Georgia Standards of Excellence places a greater emphasis on problem solving, reasoning, representation, connections, and communication.

Science GSE

On June 9, 2016, the State Board of Education approved the K-12 Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) for Science. The Science Frameworks provide one way that teachers, schools, and districts might organize and teach the Georgia Standards of Excellence within units. Frameworks include curriculum maps, pacing guides, and instructional segments. All segments are phenomenon-based and are structured in a 5E format. In addition, each instructional segment includes dedicated supports for struggling learners.

Social Studies GSE

The Social Studies Frameworks provide one way that teachers, schools, and districts might organize and teach the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) within units. Units and frameworks align to connecting themes and enduring understandings that transcend units and courses. Ultimately, the enduring understandings are what students will take from a course that applies to life beyond school. All units and frameworks are designed to promote inquiry.
